Steve Baker

Northumbria Police (confirmed)

Steve Baker has been with Northumbria Police for the past 27 years with a large proportion of that time spent in the partnership arena. He has a wide breadth of experience of working in neighbourhood policing at a variety of locations and different ranks. For six years he was the force Prevent lead in co-ordinating a multi-agency response to protecting vulnerable individuals at risk from radicalisation – a role which often involved working with people suffering from poor mental health. For the past 3 years he has been heavily involved in working with partners around mental health issues and took up the post as force lead in September 2015.

  • Developing ‘Respond’: a multi-agency simulation training programme designed to increase a team’s operational efficiency;
  • Creating a system which encompasses innovative communications technology, critical alert and messaging systems;
  • Acting out different professional roles to encourage better understanding of the needs and priorities of paramedics, police officers, mental health professionals, as well as individuals in crisis;
  • Putting collaboration and shared services at the forefront to achieve better results in emergency scenarios and;
  • Improving decision making by practicing on three emergency scenarios: Crisis in a public space; crisis within a private address; and crisis in a ward.
