Dr Mary Jane Tacchi

Dr Mary Jane Tacchi is a consultant psychiatrist. She works in a busy inner city crisis team in Newcastle upon Tyne. This is the team she was instrumental in setting up in 2000 and for which she was awarded Hospital Doctor of the Year in 2002. She has held various management roles; Assistant Medical Director, Clinical Director, Deputy Medical Director and Responsible Officer. In 2015 she completed the NHS Leadership Academy Nye Bevan Healthcare Leadership Award. She was Special Adviser in Crisis to the Royal College of Psychiatrists 2014-2017 and is currently National Advisor in Crisis to the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health. Her research interests are medication adherence, service development and the development of staff.  She has completed studies looking at the effectiveness of a cognitive intervention, patient and staff attitudes to medication and the training of mental health professionals and published the same.

  • Developing ‘Respond’: a multi-agency simulation training programme designed to increase a team’s operational efficiency
  • Creating a system which encompasses innovative communications technology, critical alert and messaging systems
  • Acting out different professional roles to encourage better understanding of the needs and priorities of paramedics, police officers, mental health professionals, as well as individuals in crisis
  • Putting collaboration and shared services at the forefront to achieve better results in emergency scenarios
  • Improving decision making by practicing on three emergency scenarios: Crisis in a public space; crisis within a private address; and crisis in a ward
